Well it looks like there’s another PR update in progress. Oh joy. That means all my favorite marketing forums will grind to a halt while everyone discusses the update.
“My site went from PR 3 to PR 4! Woo hoo!”
“Mine went from a PR 5 to a PR 3! WTF?”
“Mine hasn’t changed at all…waaah”
Personally, I don’t care much about PageRank, or Alexa rankings either for that matter.
First of all the PageRank you see in your toolbar is only updated about 4 times a year, yet Google says the true number is updated in real-time. In other words, the number you see in the toolbar could be way off from the true number.
Besides, a high PR really only comes in handy in 3 situations.
1. You’re selling your site. Some people will pay more for a high PR that they can point to their other sites.
2. You’re selling text links. Again, the higher your PR the more you can charge for blog posts, text ads, and blogroll links.
3. Link exchanges. Many site owners will only link back to sites that have attained a certain PR. Personally I think this is short-sighted. First of all, you should be keeping your visitors in mind when linking out to other sites. A PR 2 blog could have great content that your visitors will love.
Also, that PR 2 blog with great content may end up being a PR 5 after the next update. Wouldn’t you be sorry then if you hadn’t exchanged links?
